How did you like my last blog post? If you did not read it yet, check it out here.
Surprise, I did not write it. It was written by an Artificial Intelligence program called ChatGPT. You may have read about this new program as it is currently the new hotness in technology. How it works is, you give this program a prompt and it will create written pieces. It can even create computer code and God knows what else. For my blog article I simply told it, "Write a blog post about Voiceover and Improv". That's it. I gave it a very broad topic but I could have said, write a blog post about Voceover and the Misner acting technique. There is really no end to what you can ask it to create. The blog it created was pretty good. Maybe you could tell it wasn't me, maybe you couldn't.
What the blog lacked, however, was my personality. It was completely accurate and well written but it just wasn't me. Everyone has their own unique writing style and what an AI is going to generate will always be more generic, unless I can tech it my writing style. That is the next step I am very interested in. Can I teach this AI my writing style by feeding it tons of my writing and if I did, would it start writing more like me? I have a feeling the answer is yes.
Voiceover artists have been freaking out about what AI voices will do to the industry. Now writers can have their own freak out. AI has already been making music, will there be anything left of the human creative space in the future? In the near term, I don't think there is much to worry about. As with the blog post, AI does a very credible job but really can't capture all the subtleties of human emotion and creativity. But 10-20 years down the road, I think there is a lot to worry about. AI will keep getting better and newer generations will become more and more accustomed to hearing and reading AI content. At some point they won't be able to tell the difference and they might not care. I might be among the last generation of Voiceover talent before the robots take over.
The other group of people freaking out about this technology is the education community. Will kids ever need to write a paper again? Is the written essay dead? Frantic discussions are being had and clearly this will change things. The question is how do we adapt. Technology always disrupts and the answer is always how do we adapt.
Last note for Voiceover Talent particularly. If you think creatively you can actually put this technology to use for you. I had ChatGPT create an inspirational piece for me to perform to practice that kind of read. You can ask it to crate any kind piece you need to practice. You can even get it to write ad copy. I told it, "Write a 30 second radio ad for Busters Steak House". It gave me this:
"Welcome to Busters Steak House! We're the premier destination for juicy, tender steaks cooked to perfection. Whether you're in the mood for a classic filet mignon or a sizzling ribeye, we've got you covered. Plus, we offer a wide selection of sides and desserts to complete your meal. So why wait? Come on down to Busters Steak House and experience the best steaks in town. We can't wait to serve you!"
Not the greatest copy in the world but usable for practice and you could do a little editing and make it even better. Or add a qualifier, like "Write a funny 30 second ad for Busters Steak House", and get this:
"Are you tired of boring, bland steaks? Look no further than Busters Steak House! Our steaks are so juicy, tender, and flavorful, they'll make your taste buds do the cha-cha. And with our friendly, laid-back atmosphere, you'll feel like you're eating at your cool uncle's house (if your cool uncle was a steak connoisseur, that is). So come on down to Busters Steak House and treat yourself to a steak that'll have you saying, 'Moo-ve over, boring steaks!' We'll see you soon."
An AI that writes comedy! So use ChatGPT to create practice scripts for you based on exactly what you want to practice. AI is going to change the world, so use it to change YOUR world for the better.
